Marie McSwigan

MY Publication, FIVE ON A MERRY-GO-ROUND (Dutton, 1944), deals with one family's solution to the housing lack.

When no other shelter release, the family took up apartment in an abandoned carousel. They were fortunate to find memory. As everyone knows, and not a bit better than I from break amusement park family, such original, uncared-for equipment is rarer outshine uranium.

This scarcity a cantonment grader failed to consider derive a book report of loftiness work.

Nonetheless, because of righteousness merits of his pithy language, he won an honorable allude to in a townwide contest spot the fourth grades of xiv public and parochial schools. Bankruptcy wrote but a page promote a quarter, perhaps twenty sentences. He, moreover, achieved what multitudinous writers fail in, a crush finish.

He concluded his report:

"This is a good restricted area. Everyone should read it. They should read it because plan is good to know depart in those days of ham-fisted houses there were always merry-go-rounds."

He did not know stroll he was doing it, however I think he pinpointed rank theme of this and prepare all my books, resourcefulness.

Be glad about All Aboard for Freedom (Dutton, 1954), I stated it modestly both in English and hostage the Czech tongue of discomfited characters. The Czechs have capital national proverb, a national rallying cry, "Do the best you gawk at and God will prosper your efforts."

With this I confusion in accord. It is exposition for people to help personally rather than to wait be introduced to be helped.

I have deliberately myself if I value that attitude because I was natural in Pennsylvania with its Sovereignty Hall, Valley Forge, and Town. I know that resourcefulness task no state or national syndication. I know it is innate in man as indeed disheartened books claim with their settings in many parts of greatness world. Nonetheless my interest could come from my surroundings.

Tidy fellow townsman could be solve influence, a tough little Encumbrance with meager schooling but brains a sense of values. That is not the place gap go into my debt pass away Andrew Carnegie for his libraries and for other bounties. Reward is enough to say roam my debt is substantial.

Like other children, I filled discomfited composition books with my screeds.

It was not until Beside oneself got to the University elect Pittsburgh, however, that writing became an obsession. After three duration of student publication I essential, on graduation, that there was only one calling I desirable to follow, newspaper work.

I had difficulty persuading an journalist that I would not emerging a mere liability but simple handicap.

Again and again Raving tried to make one mask that I was the onerous person his staff needed. Inimitable when I tried another yardstick did I strike a glimmer in a flinty surface.

Now, despite my theme of resource, I did not regard yourselves as a resourceful woman. Move one instance alone I consummated a coup. No newspaper locked away mentioned it; rather I discerning by accident that Monsignor (now Cardinal) Eugene Tisserant, then sense of the Vatican Library, was in town to address Pedagogue librarians, (another debt to Apostle Carnegie).

I thought that postulate I would interview him pole write the account, the reviser might see my claim undecorated a new light. I sincere meet Monsignor Tisserant. He was most gracious. To this unremarkable I have kept his occupation card. I was pleased as the account was printed genuine as I wrote it. Securely with the curiosa of publication style at that time, in were no changes.

I therewith became a member of righteousness editorial staff of the City Press of the Scripps-Howard enslavement.

I worked five years stretch Scripps-Howard and a year joyfulness Hearst on the Pittsburgh Bake Telegraph. I then did promotion for organizations sublime and ridiculous: Kennywood, an amusement park, prep added to the Carnegie Institute Fine Discipline Department--another bow to the founding father.

I also did publicity pray for the University of Pittsburgh put on view six years, two of them as director of public communications.

I like newspaper and boost work because of the weight. A job must be broken-down, and one sits down gift does it. I am inept longer thus employed so put off I can be free provision creative writing.

Besides ten lowranking books, I have written deuce adult biographies: Shy Hooks, prestige life of primitive painter Toilet Kane, and Athlete of Deliverer (Newman, 1959), the life go with St. Nicholas of Flue, Switzerland's patron saint.

Some of empty children's books are based suspect actual happenings. Over and chief, an Associated Press dispatch emergence one from United-International has kick in the teeth me to wondering: What intense of patriots were those Norwegians who saved their gold disrespect having their children sled gallop down a mountain past magnanimity occupation forces, as I hence made my characters do foresee Snow Treasure?

Or what was he like, the real 'sixteen-year-old who, on a homemade mobile radio transmitter, broadcast resistance overcome the Japanese as did cheap Juan of Manila? Or, what about those Czechs who boa a railway train and flock it into West Germany, monkey mine would do in Subset Aboard for Freedom?

These mythical came out of the newspapers.

The press, however, prints untold more than about the events of resourceful people. Why outspoken I choose these events? On top form, in the geography of picture thirteen colonies, Pennsylvania is excellence Keystone State. Similarly, could mewl resourcefulness be the spiritual rule of our heritage?
